Karim's research focuses on volatile redistribution and recycling across shallow and deep reservoirs in continental rift systems. He investigate how noble gas compositions, gas chemistry, and isotopic signatures record the sources, transport, and evolution of volatiles during continental rifting, with particular emphasis on geochemically diverse settings such as the East African Rift System and the Rio Grande Rift. By integrating noble gas geochemistry with volatile chemistry and radiogenic and stable isotope systematics, Karim aims to understand how tectonic structures, mantle and crustal processes influence volatile distribution in the lithosphere. An important aspect of his research is applying these findings to understand the geological processes responsible for the accumulation of natural helium, a strategic resource with applications in scientific research, advanced technologies, and modern medical imaging.
